KOREANS put off their education and life for a necessary two year stint in the korean army.
It is completely mandatory and for those who shy away from it, they are made to look extremely bad in their community. They are the laughing stock and find it exceptionall tough to get a job.
A stint in the army is seen as life or death for koreans.
It is a must for these males to serve for their country.
When they finish their education, they don’t have a choice but to serve for their country.
Geez, we have it great in Australia.
One Korean boy, around 23 years of age, said that he was glad that he got to serve in the US army.
To serve in the US army, you have to pass an english test and have good education skills.
About 1 in every 15 pass this test.
These Koreans are seen as the best of the best when applying for jobs.
There are some who get out of serving for the army because they are ill and instead are forced to work in a post office or police station.
However, it is on their record in their country all their life and struggle to get the good jobs.
They serve in servant-like positions.
When they meet another Korean, always the topic of conversation that comes up is ‘have you been to the army?’
If you haven’t been in the army yet or have avoided it through illness, you are seen as a bit of a laughing stock. Koreans live a harsh lifestyle compared to the Australians. That is the way they have been brought up. Like one Korean said: “At least I had plenty of fun.”
Fun seeing mates get shot; or being around grenades.
That would be tough to ask.
