WELL according to the latest rankings by the Economist Intelligence Unit, those who live in Melbourne should feel lucky.

Or maybe Melbourians are taking it for granted.

Melbourne remains the third most liveable city in the world, and just 2.5 percentage points short of perfection according to the rankings.

Ranking 140 global cities on 30 criteria covering stability, healthcare, culture, environment, education and infrastructure, the think tank of The Economist magazine gives Melbourne a score of 97.5 out of a possible 100.

Winter Olympics host Vancouver remains No. 1 , scoring 98.0, despite its unfortunate lack of snow, while Vienna was ranked second with 97.9.

Harare, the capital of Zimbabwe, was judged the most unliveable city in the survey, with a total score of just 37.5.

Dhaka, capital of Bangladesh, tied with Algiers as the second worst, followed by Port Moresby.

Half of the top 10 cities come from lands Down Under. Sydney was seventh, Perth and Adelaide equal eighth and Auckland 10th (96.1).

Canada had three of the top five cities, with Toronto ranked fourth and Calgary fifth. London was ranked 54th with a score of 88.4. European cities were ranked the most liveable by region but only Vienna and Helsinki (sixth) made the top 10.

It surely makes you think sometimes. Those who love to travel and those who are always pouring backlash onto Melbourne when it is judged the third most liveable city in the world.

Where else would you want to be? Maybe Vancouver for the Winter Olympics and that’s about it.

ON Australia Day, more Indians have been bashed in central Melbourne.

It appears there is blatant racism in Australia with more and more Indians being terrorised in Australia; the land of opportunity.

There is significant doubt to whether these Indians are asking for being bashed and bullied.

Surely, the world would be a better place without this annoying bullying.

There has been numerous reports of bullying and several indians put up a protest in Melbourne late last year to stop the bullying.

Police confirmed on Tuesday the two victims in the incident on Australia Day were Indian students according to AAP.

Leading Senior Constable Kendra Jackson said one of the victims said he had been racially abused during the attack. ‘‘There are allegations from the victim of racial remarks,’’ she said.

The 18-year-old was taken to St Vincents Hospital with lacerations to the left ear.

The 22-year-old did not require hospital treatment.

The attack comes just weeks after the stabbing murder of Indian student Nitin Garg in a park in Yarraville in Melbourne’s inner west.

INDIAN students have faced a horror period in recent times in Melbourne and around Australia.

They have protested holding signs up such as ‘Racism is more dangerous than swine flu’.

The protests follow a number of racial attacks on them in Melbourne.

Many are brutally bashed; many find themselves with little hope when going out for a few drinks.

They are targeted in the Australian community; they’re seen as easy targets…but why?

I have recently discussed this issue with several Indian people in Melbourne.

They believe Australians are angry with Indians because they seem to “steal the good jobs from them” and the Australians left with jobs such as cleaning are left frustrated and in turn, try to intimidate and take it out on the travelling Indians.

One said that he “wasn’t scared” but that most Indians were “easy targets.”

He agreed that Australia’s attack on Indians has only been recent with a trend that seems to be continuing.

Many pick up jobs all around Australia; a lot flock to marketing and salesman positions.

There are more Indians and Asians in Australia than what their are pure Australians.

It must be a frustrating thing for those rare Aussies left. To see their country taken over by a flock of internationals.

Whether that’s racist or not, it appears Australians must accept multi-culturalism.

But it is apparent that Australians aren’t accepting it that well.

The Indian that I spoke to this week said that employers prefer Indians to work in workplaces than some Australians is that they work harder and work for less.

This is argumentative of course, but there’s no doubt Indians work hard for their dollar.

But just as the frustration boils over in tough economic times, Indians could feel more pain than good. And that is not right.

WEIGHT loss can change many people physically but can it change you mentally as well?

The answer is yes according to UK soapie star Ricky Groves, who told the media this week that his wife left him for another man after becoming obssessed with fitness while losing a significant amount of weight.

Groves, who is in EastEnders, told the UK press that his wife became heartless and cruel after shedding more than 17 kilos.

Certainly, you would think most people would change a lot after losing that amount of weight.

It brings more confidence and the confidence to get the men or women that maybe they couldn’t attract before.

That is why love is so important.

If they truly love that person in the relationship, they shouldn’t give into temptation.

“Immediately Hannah (Waterman) changed … the people behind the project were very pushy, very controlling,” Groves told the Daily Mail newspaper.

“They’d say, ‘This is your target weight for this time period and if you reach it, you’ll get another [$17,000].’”

KOREANS put off their education and life for a necessary two year stint in the korean army.

It is completely mandatory and for those who shy away from it, they are made to look extremely bad in their community. They are the laughing stock and find it exceptionall tough to get a job.

A stint in the army is seen as life or death for koreans.

It is a must for these males to serve for their country.

When they finish their education, they don’t have a choice but to serve for their country.

Geez, we have it great in Australia.

One Korean boy, around 23 years of age, said that he was glad that he got to serve in the US army.

To serve in the US army, you have to pass an english test and have good education skills.

About 1 in every 15 pass this test.

These Koreans are seen as the best of the best when applying for jobs.

There are some who get out of serving for the army because they are ill and instead are forced to work in a post office or police station.

However, it is on their record in their country all their life and struggle to get the good jobs.

They serve in servant-like positions.

When they meet another Korean, always the topic of conversation that comes up is ‘have you been to the army?’

If you haven’t been in the army yet or have avoided it through illness, you are seen as a bit of a laughing stock. Koreans live a harsh lifestyle compared to the Australians. That is the way they have been brought up. Like one Korean said: “At least I had plenty of fun.”

Fun seeing mates get shot; or being around grenades.

That would be tough to ask.

JENNIFER Hawkins has once again kick-started talks about body image after appearing on another cover of Marie Claire – this time naked and untouched.

While the guys love it, some female groups have begun to feel the pinch of becoming like Jennifer.

But a foundation that helps prevent eating disorders has defended it with foundation general manager Julie Parker saying on radio 3AW:

“It’s so excessive in magazines these days and young girls and women are constantly telling us that they don’t even know what they’re looking at any more, and what they want to see is more real, untouched and natural photos of celebrities and people in magazines, and I think this delivers that,” Parker said.

But it appears the pressure of girls, who look at these magazines, comes to a toll.

Many want to look like Jennifer and act with plastic surgery.

Others simply become depressed at the prospect of not being able to to do that and can lead to such things as suicide.

Still, it’s just one of many front covers of flawless models that people want to be. They will be there until people stop buying the product. It’s unlikely to end.

WHILE it is one of the cinema’s biggest movies for 2009, Avatar has a host of critics suggesting the build up to seeing a revolutionary 3D film that cost in excess of $300 million to make, is one that could disappoint.

The Age reviewer Jim Schembri said it lacked a lot of creative narration.

“The whole thing plays out like a green-tinted fairytale written by a retired hippie,” he writes in The Age.

“How much you enjoy Avatar will largely depend on how much you are willing to forgive a director who has given so much to popular cinema.

“While Titanic was a melodramatic masterpiece where state-of-the-art filmmaking technology served the heart of the story, Avatar is the exact opposite – too concerned about the way things look rather than the way they feel.”

Avatar will explode into the hearts of fans this summer; just as Twilight did last month.

It is great to see more and more blockbusters being made.

Whether they live up to their name of ‘blockbuster’ remains left to the eye of the audience.

For those into sci-fi’s, this will be one unforgettable film.

THE fact that Tiger Woods has taken an indefinite break from the game of sport; the game that he was the champion of, is an unfortunate thing for the game and the sporting world.

Woods was a delight on the sporting front that drove thousands to watch him on the golf course.

He is the multi-million dollar man that was the Michael Jordan of golf.

It is clear to see why he has taken the time out on Saturday to write on his website www.tigerwoods.com that he will take an indefinite break from the sport to concentrate on his marriage.

It also not a surprising call after what has been an unforgettable week in the news for Woods.

He crashed his car outside his Florida home.

The accident two weeks ago eventually led to 11 women – including two porn actresses – to come forward and claim affairs with the golfing great, whose $1 billion fortunate has been built on the back of his squeaky-clean image,

“I am deeply aware of the disappointment and hurt that my infidelity has caused to so many people, most of all my wife and children,’’ Woods said in a statement posted.

“I want to say again to everyone that I am profoundly sorry and that I ask forgiveness. It may not be possible to repair the damage I’ve done, but I want to do my best to try.

“I would like to ask everyone, including my fans, the good people at my foundation, business partners, the PGA Tour, and my fellow competitors, for their understanding. What’s most important now is that my family has the time, privacy, and safe haven we will need for personal healing.

“After much soul searching, I have decided to take an indefinite break from professional golf. I need to focus my attention on being a better husband, father, and person.

“Again, I ask for privacy for my family and I am especially grateful for all those who have offered compassion and concern during this difficult period.’’

STRIPPING in public is always going to get you in trouble.

Stripping in a classroom is going to be worse consequences particularly in this day and age of internet, phones and YouTube.

It had the worst consequences for 57-year-old Martin Rouse, a British teacher.

The overweight teacher stripped off his shirt in a classroom in front of his students, saying he “was trying to be cool.”

Instead, it has pretty much ended his teaching career.

The Daily Mail reports that teacher’s strip tease came to light after a student at Sudbury Upper School in Suffolk, eastern England taped the incident on a mobile phone and uploaded the video to YouTube.

A student at the school told the Daily Mail the pupils found the stunt hilarious.

“People were goading him saying, ‘I bet you haven’t got their muscles’…he told us all ‘I’ll show you’ and started taking off his shirt,” the newspaper quoted an unnamed student as saying.

Mr Rouse was fired immediately by the school principal David Forrest when a colleague found out what had happened.

The teacher was then banned from teaching at all 357 schools in the Suffolk County Council area.

We now know that everyone has to keep their kit on at all times; out in the public arena is a dangerous place.

Who knows when Big Brother is watching?

Especially with the amount of video phones around these days.

CIVIL partnership throughout the world – and even marriage – should be for everyone, despite their gender, colour or sexual preference.

However, a straight British couple who rejected marriage but wanted to seal their love with civil partnership were told they can’t do this because they are not gay.

Usually it is the same sex couples fighting for marriage freedom but this time it is straight couples that in this case they will fight for equality in court.

Tom Freeman and Katherine Doyle, both 25, were shocked of the decision when told they can’t do this.

“We want to secure official status for our relationship in a way that supports the call for complete equality and is free of the negative connotations of marriage,” Mr Freeman said.

“If we cannot have a civil partnership, we will not get married.”

There are just few differences between marriage and civil partnership – one being civil partnership cannot be in a church.

However, surely, equality will win out in this case.

Both of these people aren’t doing anything wrong or against the law; why should they be restricted?
